For many years I have thought about the idea of starting up my own online business. I love to think about new business ideas and how they might work out. However, the fact is life costs money, and it is very easy to get caught in the routine of working a job to earn a salary and pay the bills. I find this life to be boring and way too repetitive. So, why not become an online entrepreneur?
It has now been 14 years since I graduated from university with a business degree. The whole time I have worked for a hand full of companies in the Internet marketing and e-commerce industry.
My specialty is building web traffic by search engine optimization (SEO), paid search engine marketing (SEM), and growing it all with super web analytics. This is what I do. I love to analyze patterns of emotion, and language that make the Internet tick. And so, I have become an online entrepreneur!
I have discovered that there is a colossal lack of freedom when working for big companies.
Daily life in a corporation is so confining. I have seen this during the past 7 years working in Toronto, and most acutely the last 12 months. People are choking with too much policy, and totally unneeded quality control. I realized clearly this corporate world is not for me. The corporate culture is the greasy oil to me the fresh water. H20.
Working in a large company can be paralyzing. Conformity is a curse. Perhaps the funniest thing I have heard during my last 7 years of corporate work was the term “socializing ideas”. Hilarious! I’m sorry, but whatever that is…it’s not going to generate high profits. Often, there are way too many people simply not making decisions, or making decisions very slowly, and almost always decisions are made using low quality or bad information. Too many decisions are consistently made driven by egos and emotions, and almost are never made using high quality information. So much money is wasted. All of the above leads to continuous failure, or mediocre results.
Personally, I love to make decisions, using high quality information, and quickly. I also love to experiment so that I can find the best solution and course of action. I love analyzing data, and making smarter decisions. I like to move at the fastest speed possible in an efficient, thorough manner.
And so, just over 1 year ago my wife and I decided we needed to start up our own Internet business and dive into the life of becoming entrepreneurs. It was March 2011, and I asked her over a mid-afternoon coffee while away from the office, “do you want to work on some online business projects with me”? And she said, “Yes, that sounds good”.
And now we have several web projects on the go. We have so much fun working together!! Together we have become online entrepreneurs. In just 3-4 months we will be diving into this world full-time, 100% our time. We will see how things go, I wish for more rewarding feelings ahead!
