Other than family and friends, one of the things we were saddest to leave behind was our crossfit box, Tidal Crossfit. We only found the place 4 months before leaving and didn’t want to lose the significant strides in our fitness level.
In North America, there is usually an understanding between the independent but affiliated Crossfit gyms. With advance notice, you can drop in at other boxes and pay a nominal fee or buy a t-shirt. The original plan was to drop in on Crossfit gyms all over Europe. We even bought a domain, hoping to record the various experiences.
Of course, the European approach to exercise is not the same as North American. There are few runners on the street, gyms are few and far between, and Crossfit is almost nonexistent. Hours spent walking still don’t replace the weights and high intensity workouts we used to do. So we’ve had to find alternatives. Here’s how to work out while travelling:
The Best At Home Bodyweight Workouts:
This has caused some controversy but the fact is, it’s better than than nothing.
This has been one of my go to workouts for a few years now. It doesn’t look like much but always leaves me sore. The Women’s Health website has many more bodyweight workouts available for download (including this Crossfit-inspired one) but this remains one of my favorites.
3. Crossfit Bodyweight Exercises
The fundamental bodyweight exercises – squats, lunges, pushups, sit-ups – are a part of every Crossfit warmup or workout. There are numerous resources out there of the workouts focus that need only your body, a pullup bar, and jump rope.
Here a few lists to work from:
- 100 Travel Crossfit Workouts
- Bodyweight WODs – Easy, intermediate and difficult levels
- Crossfit Bodyweight Workouts
- The Traveling WOD website
- Travel Workout Of the Days
- WODs To Go
4. Travel and Bodyweight Workout Apps
This was a random discovery that I was delighted to make. The You Are Your Own Gym app has programmed workouts, tabata interval sessions, and video demonstration so every technique. Even starting with the novice sessions, there are exercises I haven’t seen and hope this helps offset all the culinary adventures we’re having.
There is also this Andriod Crossfit Travel app.
