Tuscany, Italy is a top cycling destination for many reasons. Day after day of sunshine, stunning rural scenery, fabulous food and wine for refueling, and best of all, considerate drivers.
Lucca attracts cyclists of all abilities with pedestrianized streets, an easy loop of the castle walls. We rented bikes one day with the idea of attempting to pedal the 40km riverside route to the ocean. Instead, we bumped into the Itinerario Ciclopedonale di Puccini, several loops and routes that hit on landmarks associated with Lucca’s most famous and loved citizen, the opera composer Giacomo Puccini.

Although beautiful and an easy and comfortable ride, the Serchio River is somewhat from the surrounding landscape.
We took a turn off the river, not knowing what was ahead. (Spoiler alert: it was a big hill)
