Last night we watched the movie Midnight Cowboy. In a moment, my view of travel luggage options totally changed. John Voight had a bitchen cow pattern suitcase. Here it is…cowhide patterns.
So, I thought maybe I want to travel with a simple rectangular piece of luggage. Slap a shoulder strap on it, and off you go. As long as it wasn’t too big or too heavy. Carry-on size is essential.
During my previous trips to Europe over the past years I took a small collapsable 30L M.E.C. travel handbag combo backpack which was great because it was light weight, durable, and fit pretty much what I needed. However, that was for shorter trips, 3 weeks at a time and I didn’t take a computer, or anything fragile. This time around I am taking my laptop so I can work, cameras, maybe an ipad, a sound recording device, headphones, and other fragile items. I’m also strongly considering taking my OCTATRACK sampler so that I can make music during extended stays in cities like Buenos Aires, and Berlin. So a hard case with internal padding might have some benefits. Whatever I may find, a small size will still be key. I just don’t like to carry a lot of stuff around with me. Light travel is easy travel.
Tough to say what I will be able to find. I checked out a store today that had some pretty amazing cases. German travel luggage cases made by RIMOWA. Wow, these are nice looking cases. They appear super durable. But, they also cost over $1000, so it isn’t going to happen. I have many more important items to spend money on. I think I can find something in the next 4 months that I can modify to suit my needs. If you look, it is not too hard to find old stuff at thrift stores or on Craigslist that is supreme quality just like the RIMOWA cases.
And so, the hunt for the perfect travel luggage and/or travel bag combo begins!
